El Chichonal arrojó una nube de ceniza y gases que ascendió a la estratósfera y pudo percibirse en la India y Japón. Este es el suceso del que habla Jaime Sabines en sus Crónicas del volcán. Su testimonio abarca los acontecimientos suscitados por la erupción del volcán Chichón (a partir de entonces llamado "El Chichonal"), entre el 28 de marzo y el 4 de abril de 1982. Por primera vez (y tal vez única) el poeta Sabines recurrió al género de la crónica para dejar un vívido testimonio de aquel cataclismo. Su crónica de los hechos no cumple con la simple narración de lo acontecido, sino que va más lejos: enjuicia, valora y prioriza los hechos que han visto sus ojos. Una deslumbrante y conmovedora interpretación de aquel castigo de Dios.
